Every day, girls face barriers to education caused by poverty, cultural norms and practices, poor infrastructure, violence and fragility. Ensuring that all girls and young women receive a quality education is their human right, a global development priority, and a strategic priority for the World Bank. Achieving gender equality is central to the World Bank Group twin goals of ending extreme poverty and boosting shared prosperity. It is also about ensuring that girls learn and feel safe while in school; have the opportunity to complete all levels of education, acquiring the knowledge and skills to compete in the labor market; gain socio-emotional and life skills necessary to navigate and adapt to a changing world; make decisions about their own lives; and contribute to their communities and the world. Better educated women tend to be more informed about nutrition and healthcare, have fewer children, marry at a later age, and their children are usually healthier, should they choose to become mothers.

While the stress and isolation of the pandemic has spared no one, it has had a disproportionate detrimental impact on the mental health of teen girls, a new study published in The Lancet Psychiatry has found. Using more than 59, responses from surveys on Icelandic teens, researchers found that rates of depression and worsened mental well-being increased among both adolescent boys and girls during the pandemic compared to earlier levels, but girls were significantly more affected.

Twenty years ago, says Gudberg, Icelandic teens were among the heaviest-drinking youths in Europe. We approach a large building. A couple of minutes ago, we passed two halls dedicated to badminton and ping pong. Or they might be on outings with their parents.
