BERLIN Reuters - In , the Nazis decided that forced laborers in concentration camps would work harder if they were promised sex -- so they made female prisoners work in brothels for them. Beginning with the Austrian camp at Mauthausen in , the SS opened 10 brothels, the biggest of which was in Auschwitz, in modern Poland, where as many as 21 women prisoners once worked. The last opened in early , the year the war ended. The chapter is separate from the annals of the Holocaust of European Jews. Jewish women were not recruited as prostitutes, and Jewish men were not admitted to the brothels.

Rob Attar speaks to historian Laurence Rees about his book The Holocaust , which features his interviews with Nazis who committed atrocities, as well as Jewish survivors. He asks: how, even after the Holocaust was over, did some of those involved feel they could justify it morally? Why, then, did it happen there? I think a number of things came together. The most important was the loss in the First World War, which created an environment where people were looking for someone to blame.





On 6 May , the Institute of Sexology, an academic foundation devoted to sexological research and the advocacy of homosexual rights, was broken into and occupied by Nazi-supporting youth. Several days later the entire contents of the library were removed and burned. The institute was initially occupied by The German Student Union, who were a collective of Nazi-supporting youth.
