On 9 April , Leonardo da Vinci was accused of sodomy in an anonymous report to the Florentine authorities. Leonardo, then just short of his 24th birthday, was one of four men said to have had sex with the year-old Jacopo Saltarelli. This last-named man was a member of a prominent Florentine family who were intermarried with the Medici rulers of the city. As an anonymous denunciation, however, the report was not accepted, and less than two months later the group was absolved on condition that they were not reported again. Although sodomy was illegal, it was very common for young men in Renaissance Florence to have sex with other men. This figure might seem astonishing today, but it reflects a very different set of sexual norms in the historical period.

He left behind some remarkable artifacts in the form of paintings and writings and drawings on all manner of subjects. The following are some of my favorites. For all his skill, Leonardo was not a prolific painter — the major part of his surviving output is in the form of his notebooks filled with theoretical and scientific writings, notes, and drawings. Leonardo Da Vinci conceived the first airplane, conceptualized a helicopter, a tank, concentrated solar power, a calculator, the double hull — and plate tectonics — while advancing the study of anatomy, civil engineering, optics, and hydrodynamics — all conceived and detailed centuries before modern science would prove him right. Considered to be one of the greatest artists of all time, his Mona Lisa and The Last Supper are among the most famous paintings ever created. He was a man of extraordinary strength and physical beauty who never married; indeed there is no record of any woman in his life — not even a friendship — though he lived for 89 years. When he was 24, he was arrested for sodomy — a not uncommon occurrence for an artist in 16th century Florence — but charge that was dismissed due a lack of witnesses who would testify.
